Volcanoes DO Form Rapidly December 6, 2007

You will enjoy the photos of this eye-witness account of a rapidly-forming volcano and the strange phenomenon of stones floating on the ocean as far as they could see.

Another recently-formed island is Surtsey, off of Iceland which became an island in November of 1963.

Surtsey offers a great lesson that what scientists long attribute to long time periods can actually happen quickly. Geologic features formed in weeks, not in decades or centuries.
